Alexey Pertsev is the developer of Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixer. A Dutch court granted Pertsev an extension on Tuesday. According to reports, Perstev was not allowed to control Tornado Cash. Prosecutors argued that Perstev is an important person in the operation of the crypto mixer. The developer was arrested on suspicion of involvement in money laundering via Tornado Cash.
The Netherlands authorities claimed that the mixer was being used to hide criminal money flows and was used for hacking and cryptocurrency scams. The U.S. Treasury department placed sanctions on addresses relating to Tornado Cash and banned residents from using it. This was done to prevent users from exploiting and hacking Decentralized Finance (DeFi).
Pertsev was ordered by the court to serve three more months in custody in the country. The court session was postponed to February 20, 2023. Pertsev was placed in custody for 90 days, as per court order dated August 25. The decision was criticized by the crypto community who also protested against it. Protestors demanded that developers be targeted instead of hackers and thieves.
